The 30 Most Beautiful Women in Indie:
The Gospel According to Jamie
The Gospel According to Jamie
There are just so many talented, and beautiful, Women in the industry these days... this list is the 30 that are both.
Tracyanne Campbell, Camera Obscura
Her classic voice and look was what first drew my attention, and then this Scottish beauty began to impress me with her very talented band over many albums. I wouldn't mind if she were singing "French Navy" to me, not one iota.
Annie Erin Clark, aka St. Vincent
Her career kicked off with being a member of Sufjan Steven's band, and then putting out her own tunes under the moniker St. Vincent. She's got an angelic look to her, fittingly, and is a very talented musician.
Santi White, aka Santogold/Santigold
A Philadelphia native, turned Brooklyn resident, Santi has been behind the scenes for a long time in the industry, and just now is getting her moment to shine. Seemingly a large part in M.I.A.'s career, with an equally unique fashion sense. Her eyes could make me do anything.
Amber Coffman, Dirty Projectors
Such a cute personality in both song and look, Amber is edible. While she isn't top on my list of the women of Dirty Projectors, she's certainly adorable.
Although this harpist has been around for awhile, making stellar albums, it wasn't until this year that she blew up a bit with her triple disc album, Have One on Me. Additionally, she sings and plays piano along with her main instrumentation, her many harps. Joanna has, for me, a very fairy tale-ish look to her.
Natasha Khan, aka Bat for Lashes
Another Londoner on this list, Natasha has a chameleon like look- sometimes she strikes you differently than another time. She's very exotic, to say the least, being half Pakistani.
Mathangi Arulpragasam, aka M.I.A.
This South London born Sri Lankan Temal artist has been involved with the Arts in pretty much every imaginable way. Although a bit off it, she is a decent music maker with a jawdropping body and face.
Kazu Makino, Blonde Redhead
A distinct sound and look grace Kazu, and the face of Blonde Redhead. I've said it lower in the list, I'm a real sucker for Japanese women, but I can't imagine many disagreeing with this beauty.
Caroline Polachek, Chairlift
Starting out by making music for haunted houses, I'd say it's not only a pretty rad story for Chairlift, but also goes to show you where talent is hiding (no pun intended). She's got a great voice, a lot of talent, and a striking face.
Ellen Campesinos!, Los Campesinos!
This Welsh front-woman is seemingly nuttier than squirrel shit, as is the entire band, but they are hilarious and severely talented. Ellen seems to do it all musically, and her accent would be the death of me. Redheaded Welsh women FTW.
Marketa Irglova, The Swell Season
When I first saw The Swell Season open up for Damien Rice years ago, Marketa caught my eye. And then we all saw her in Once... she's so cute and soft spoken. I know a lot of people don't see the intrigue in her look, but there is something about her very Czech face that makes my heart stop.
Aisha Burns, Balmorhea
Maybe it's because she's the violinist of one of my all-time favorite bands, but I find Aisha so ridiculously adorable, and sexy. She's so composed and professional live, and having had the opportunity to talk with her for a bit I became a bit puppy dog lovey dovey over her.
Angel Deradoorian, Dirty Projectors
It's hard to pick between the two front-women of Dirty Projectors, but in terms of being more aesthetically pleasing, I'll go with Angel.
Emily Haines, Metric, Broken Social Scene
Born in India, grew up in Toronto, Emily has had large success in the music industry. Both being in the background of a large group like Broken Social Scene, and having more creative control in Metric and Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton. A multi-instrumentalist with a more unique and deeper voice. Classically gorgeous.
Not many people come from a higher pedigree in terms of talent than Charlotte does. An Anglo-French singer-songwriter and actress with credentials to boot. Deceivingly young looking at times, and then other times she looks her age. Regardless, she's beautiful.
So. Damn. Cute. With a set of pipes to boot. She's got a very unique voice, one very easily identifiable. Regina's Russian born, and has the classic Russian look.
Neko Case, The New Pornographers,
Neko is so unbelievably better looking live, and that pretty much goes for her sound, too. The classic example of a Cherry Redhead. When I think of the word Woman, often I picture Neko Case.
Lisa Lobsing, Broken Social Scene, Reverie Sound Revue
Despite her crazy ass hairdos, she's so appealing... maybe more so because of her obscure look. Either way, she is delightful to look at. And a talented singer.
Jenny Lewis, Rilo Kiley
I had a crush on Jenny Lewis back from The Wizard days, and really love her solo career. Her voice is so kind, so varied and her talent behind any given instrument is up there, too.
Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power
One of the sexiest voices I've ever had the pleasure of hearing, and a beautiful Woman to pair up with it so nicely. It seemed like things looked rather grim for Cat Power in regards to her boozing and using habits, but she is seemingly past it. Crosses fingers.
Leslie Feist, aka Feist, Broken Social Scene
Miss Feist has certainly blown up in popularity within her solo career, and rightfully so. She was a part of one of the staples of Indie-Rock in Broken Social Scene for many years. She's got a natural look, the girl next door. And she can belt, and play just about anything musically.
Geethali Norah Jones Shankar, aka Norah Jones
Norah is BK born and raised, half Bengali Indian, and of great musical blood. A multi-instrumentalist that seems like she is easily comfortable singing as she is playing any given instrument and covering others' songs. One of the most beautiful faces I've ever laid eyes on. Slightly exotic, and very classy.
Alexei Perry, Handsome Furs
It may aid in this list that I'm a Wolf Parade lover and avid reader, as Alexei is married to Dan Boeckner and also writes fiction. Aside from the aforementioned, she's so ridiculously sexy and is a whiz on the keys and synthesizers.
Li Lykke Timotej Zachrisson, aka Lykke Li
I am smitten with Lykke Li's voice and incredibly attractive features. She's so exotic, which is odd for a dirty blonde. I'm a "Little Bit" in love, yes I am.
Tamaki Kunishi, Mono
Thankfully the language barrier existed for me when I had the chance to see Mono and meet Kunishi, because I was retarded. So much more beautiful in person than I was expecting, and simply one of the better bassists alive today. I am privy to Japanese women, I will admit... but Kunishi is stunning.
Lisa Hannigan, formerly of Damien Rice
This Irish bombshell has one of the most beautiful of voices, with a face to match it. At her shows, it's rather hard to hear anything said between songs, as most of the men in the crowd are proposing in drunkard fashion, yelling over one another.
Zooey Deschanel, She & Him
Many people were smitten with Zooey from her acting first. And then we all heard her voice in Elf... it was only a matter of time until she made a name for herself in music, as well. She couldn't have picked a more appropriate partner in M. Ward, and their duo career is now in full swing. She's quite easy on the ears and the eyes. Speaking of, those eyes... and that smile. Sigh.
Emma-Lee Moss, aka Emmy the Great
I first fell in love with Emmy's look and her sound through Noah and the Whale, and have progressively just got more head over heels for her as the years went by. Half Chinese + half English = Goddess, apparently. And she's a multi-instrumentalist at the forefront of the Anti-Folk scene.
Theresa Wayman, Warpaint
Well, the women of Warpaint are all lookers, but Theresa takes the cake (on left, holding guitar). I'm usually not affected by people to the extent when I cannot even speak... I was more than tongue tied the first time I had the pleasure of meeting Miss Wayman. A great guitarist and vocalist, with some acting credits to her name, I think it's safe to say that Theresa will be around for quite some time.
Alexandra Lawn, Ra Ra Riot
This cellist, vocalist and pianist stopped me in my tracks when I saw Ra Ra Riot live. Goo-goo-ga-ga. She brings a ton of energy to an already rather Poppy and upbeat band. There's something sexy about the cello in its own right- Alexandra makes it gorgeous.
